Every Upcoming Witcher Project Currently In Development

The Witcher franchise may not be the biggest ever in the world, but it has firmly took its place in various mediums and forms with the original Andrzej Sapkowski short stories, then novels, then TV series, video games and more. Today we’ll preview every major Witcher project that’s currently in development.

New Witcher Book by Andrzej Sapkowski (2024/2025)

First and foremost, we have the newest entry in The Witcher saga that Andrzej Sapkowski is writing right now. It has been a decade since the last one came out, titled Season of Storms, which was a sidequel between the short stories. This new one may also very likely be a sidequel.

He first revealed that he was writing a new Witcher book earlier this year, and then at Comic Con Vienna in November, Sapkowski confirmed that the book will arrive in Poland in late 2024, and internationally in early 2025.

The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep (2024)

Another 2024 entry will be the new anime film called The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep, an adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s short story “A Little Sacrifice“. Sirens will take place between episodes 5 and 6 of The Witcher Season 1.

Developed by Studio Mir who also made Nightmare of the Wolf, Sirens of the Deep will bring back Doug Cockle as the iconic voice of Geralt of Rivia as well as Anya Chalotra and Joey Batey as Yennefer and Jaskier respectively, plus Christina Wren as Essi Daven.

The official synopsis states: “Geralt of Rivia, a mutated monster hunter, is hired to investigate a series of attacks in a seaside village and finds himself drawn into a centuries-old conflict between humans and merpeople. He must count on friends — old and new — to solve the mystery before the hostilities between the two kingdoms escalate into all-out war.

The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep has a late 2024 release window.

The Rats (2024?)

The Rats is the second live-action spinoff of The Witcher after Blood Origin and its production has already been concluded this summer after two months of filming in Cape Town, South Africa.

Helmed by The Sandman and Shadow and Bone director Mairzee Almas, The Rats will focus on the teenage gang of the same name, which were introduced in Season 3 of The Witcher. A leaked synopsis describes the project as: “Six teenage thieves must rely on their criminal skills as they plan the biggest heist of their careers against the most dangerous crime ring in the kingdom.”

The cast of The Rats includes Ben RadcliffeChristelle Elwin , Fabian McCallumAggy K. AdamsJuliette AlexandraConnor Crawford as Giselher, Mistle, Kayleigh, Iskra, Reef and Asse. Joining them are Dolph Lundgren as Brehen, Deoudone van der Merwe as Juniper among others.

No release date is known for The Rats, but with only two months of filming, the post-production process should be quicker than a full season and normally it should be ready in 2024, but it will be up to Netflix to fit this into their packed release schedule.

The Witcher Season 4 and Season 5 (2025/2026?)

Netflix’s next main entries in The Witcher franchise will be Season 4 which will see Liam Hemsworth take over the role of Geralt of Rivia from Henry Cavill and a planned Season 5. Both seasons are still planned to be filmed back-to-back with Season 5 likely being the last based on what we heard.

Currently, light prep for Season 4 is happening at Longcross Studios with the writers polishing the scripts after the WGA strike ended. Season 5 has already been outlined before the strike and work on that is expected to begin very soon.

Filming for The Witcher Season 4 is expected to begin sometime in 2024. If all goes according to plan, after Season 4 wraps there will be a short pause and filming for Season 5 will then begin.

No release dates have been given by Netflix, but considering the approximate production schedule, we should expect Season 4 sometime in 2025 with Season 5 perhaps in 2026.

The Witcher child-friendly animated show (TBA)

Back in 2021, Netflix announced an family-friendly animated Witcher series. There has been complete radio silence on this one ever since. No release dates, no cast, no plot details. We only had a few comments from showrunner Lauren Hissrich:

That process came out a ton of conversations, which of course broached, if we do a kids and family show, is it going to be The Witcher at all? How do we do The Witcher without all of the gore, all of the violence, all of the brutality that we see in the Witcher world? Those things to me are the bells and whistles of this world. If you peel away those layers, you come back to basic tales of morality.

That’s what all of Sapkowski’s short stories are. They’re morality tales, they’re fairytales. They’re based on a bunch of folklore and mythology, the exact sort of tales that Grimms’ fairytales do, that frankly, Disney movies do. So, it was about, how do we take those same fundamental lessons, those same tales, keep them in the world of The Witcher, but make them more appropriate for kids?

Next Witcher mainline game aka “Polaris” + two sequels (TBA)

The next mainline Witcher game from CD Projekt Red codenamed “Polaris” will mark the beginning of a new trilogy and a new story. Neither the setting, nor the protagonist are known at the moment, but we only have that one promo art with what looks like a lynx medallion in the snow as well as the fact that it will be developed in Unreal Engine 5.

The development of Polaris is just kicking into full gear as we speak since CDPR is mostly finished with Cyberpunk 2077 and its updates and most of the team will start working on the new Witcher game.

No release dates are known for this one and will probably not be known for a while.

The Witcher 1 remake (TBA)

w1 remake

Another very exciting upcoming project from CDPR is the remake of The Witcher 1 that was originally released in 2007. Unlike Polaris, this won’t be developed by CDPR themselves, but a fellow Polish studio Fool’s Theory, which includes several Witcher veterans who worked on the original games. Still, CDPR will provide full creative supervision.

As per CDPR it’s a “story-driven, single player open-world RPG – a modern reimagining of 2007’s The Witcher.” Just like Polaris, this too will be developed in Unreal Engine 5. Here’s a statement from CDPR:

Collaborating with Fool’s Theory on the project is just as exciting, as some of the people there have been previously involved in The Witcher games. They know the source material well, they know how much gamers have been looking forward to seeing the remake happen, and they know how to make incredible and ambitious games. And although it will take some time before we’re ready to share more about and from the game, I know it’ll be worth the wait.”

The Witcher spinoff/multiplayer game aka “Sirius” (TBA)

The last one is a new upcoming game codenamed “Sirius”, which is said to include multiplayer as well as single-player. Not much is known about it except for the fact that it’s being developed by Molasses Flood gamedev studio, which was purchased by CDPR.

The project has undergone a reboot recently with the team formulating a “new framework the project” and building this new framework around the “material part of the already developed elements of the game by the Molasses Flood”.

It’s difficult to say what we’ll end up seeing from this project and when and how the multiplayer aspect factor in this setting.

Bonus: The Witcher 3 Mod Editor (2024)

This isn’t technically a brand new separate project, but CDPR is currently working on a mod editor for The Witcher 3, which will open many new opportunities for modders and even perhaps fan projects that would create entire new storylines.

Maybe someone would even be able to bring back Iorveth and create a new questline with him? We’ll find out in 2024.

All in all, there’s a good amount of Witcher projects for the rest of the decade; including a brand new book from the man himself.

The Witcher Season 4 is in production for a 2025 release. Andrzej Sapkowski’s new Witcher book has a planned Winter 2024/2025 release with The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep anime set for a late 2024 release as well.
