The next installment of Netflix’s The Witcher which will see Liam Hemsworth step into Henry Cavill’s shoes as Geralt of Rivia has been in development since Fall 2022. While there previously was a filming date set in the prior months, plans have changed.

Filming for The Witcher Season 4 won’t start until 2024

Originally, filming for The Witcher Season 4 was planned to start in September 2023 and last until May 2024. This isn’t the case anymore as production has been delayed until 2024 and filming for Season 4 won’t start until then.

The exact reasons for the delay aren’t known, but more likely than not it has something to do with the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. While Season 4 was originally intent on filming during the WGA strike, the SAG-AFTRA strike may have made it more complicated.

We don’t know the exact date when Season 4 is supposed to start filming now, but we’ll find out eventually.

Everyones Enemy

When Season 4 may be released on Netflix? Well, with filming only starting in 2024, we’re most likely looking at a 2025 release now.

Alternatively, with the new split release model, they could finish filming the first volume and quickly start post-production on it for a very late 2024 release. But that would work if they start filming in January and have zero complications. With the normal pace, 2025 is more likely.

For comparison, Season 3 started filming on March 31, 2022 and wrapped on September 12, 2022 with a Summer 2023 release. That’s roughly 14 months of filming and post-production.

In the meantime, we have found who will play the villainous Leo Bonhart in The Witcher.

Before all that, though, production designer Andrew Laws and costume designer Lucinda Wright talked to Metro about meeting Liam Hemsworth and introducing him to some concepts.

Andrew Laws began: “It’s a very exciting season. Liam’s been down to the studio, we’ve walked him through preliminary concept ideas for things. He’s very excited. He’s super enthusiastic. I think it’s gonna be a really great evolution for the show.

Lucinda Wright continued: “I’ve met Liam briefly and he is six foot four and another beautiful specimen for a costume designer to showcase, so I’m very lucky. It’s very exciting as well because he’s going to bring something special.

Laws teased more about the upcoming fourth season: “The big thing I can share is that in season four our world grows even more. So we begin to explore new parts of the Continent that will be familiar to the fans, but that we haven’t yet seen in our series. We’re exploring different location opportunities, both in the UK and outside the UK for different parts of the stories. We do know what our season is at this point. We do have scripts, so we are still advancing with what we’re doing in terms of pre-concepting locations and concepts for sets, etc.

The Witcher Season 4 is in production for a 2025 release. Andrzej Sapkowski’s new Witcher book has a planned Winter 2024/2025 release with The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep anime set for a late 2024 release as well.
