The title for House of the Dragon‘s opening episode of Season 2 is “A Son for a Son“. The title comes from Daemon Targaryen’s letter to Rhaenyra in response to the death of her son, Lucerys Velaryon.

In the books, Daemon sent this letter from Harrenhal and it was very brief and to the point: “An eye for an eye, a son for a son. Lucerys will be avenged.”

The result was the infamous duo Blood and Cheese sneaking into the Red Keep with the task of killing one of Aegon’s sons. And they do. We already know Sam C. Wilson and Mark Stobbart will portray Blood and Cheese respectively. The scene was already filmed earlier this year.

Details of how Daemon arranged that are scarce, but he wasn’t in physical contact with anyone involved. In House of the Dragon, that will be different.

According to inside sources, in the first episode of Season 2, Daemon will secretly sneak into King’s Landing in the night and there can be only one purpose for that.

There is no confirmation for the next bit, but the most obvious possibility is that he’d seek the help of Sonoya Mizuno‘s Mysaria to find the necessary talent to perform a dirty task.

It’s also possible that Daemon would only need to find Cheese from Mysaria, as Blood was a former Gold Cloak and the two could have been already acquainted from Daemon’s time as Commander of the Gold Cloaks.

Another thing that this implies is that Daemon won’t be in Harrenhal until after the first episode and instead more likely he’s still on Dragonstone. In consequence, if the line “An eye for an eye, a son for a son. Lucerys will be avenged” is uttered in this episode, it probably won’t be a letter, but directly spoken.

The aftermath

What comes next we already saw back in May. During their stay in Caceres, one of the sequences filmed was the one for Prince Jaehearys’ funeral procession.

We saw Alicent Hightower and Helaena Targaryen in an open carriage as well as young prince’s body in an open casket with the herald played by Scroobius Pip claiming: “Behold the work of Rhaenyra the Cruel!“.

There’s a very high possibility that this scene was filmed by Geeta Patel, who’s in charge of episodes 3 and 8 this season. That means that Blood & Cheese kill Jaehaerys in Episode 1 and the funeral isn’t until Episode 3, or they kill the prince in Episode 2 instead.

That said, the first episode is way too appropriately titled “A Son for a Son” for the Blood & Cheese scene not to happen in it.

The production of Season 2 is expected to wrap in September and it’s expected to be released in 2024. Do follow Redanian Intelligence for news on House of the Dragon and other fantasy series.
