Netflix’s The Witcher Still on Track For Seasons 4 and 5

Much has happened in the world of The Witcher in the past few months, especially on the Netflix side with the exit of Henry Cavill and the release of the live-action spinoff Blood Origin that was met with criticism, to put it mildly. Nonetheless, we have a small update of the future plans of Netflix’s The Witcher franchise.

The Witcher Season 4 and Season 5 Are Still Planned

Back in September 2022, we reported that Netflix gave the green light to The Witcher Season 4 and Season 5, and had the intention of producing them back-to-back.

Netflix has since officially renewed the series for Season 4 with Liam Hemsworth, with no word of a Season 5, but we have checked and were told by our sources that Season 4 and Season 5 are still very much the plan as of January 2023.

Season 4 is still in pretty early stages of development and writing for both seasons is expected to take more than a half of 2023. It is our understanding that Liam Hemsworth was already on board as Geralt of Rivia when these plans were made.

Is The Witcher Season 5 intended to be the last?

We didn’t get a straight answer on this question, so it’s very much up in the air at the moment. That said, it is quite common for productions to make the last two entries in a franchise back-to-back or break the last entry into two parts. So the likelihood of Netflix wanting The Witcher to end with Season 5 seems high.

But as it stand now, officially Netflix has renewed The Witcher only for Season 4. Whether Season 4 will be produced safe and sound with a Season 5 in sight, that is a different question, and the answer is anyone’s guess.

The streaming world is quite shaky and uncertain at the moment and many productions are being axed and “un-renewed” even when they are deep into filming, especially in the recent several months, despite Netflix boss Ted Sarandos claiming that they “never cancelled a successful show“, a statement many online found debatable, to say the least.

But going back to The Witcher, we know it’s officially renewed for Season 4 and we know they plan a Season 5 to go along with Season 4. This is how things stand at the beginning of 2023 and time will tell if anything changes or everything goes according to plan.

Season 3 of The Witcher is in post-production for a Summer 2023 release. The live-action prequel The Witcher: Blood Origin had just had a December 25 release and the Rats spin-off is in pre-production Stay tuned to Redanian Intelligence and do pop into our Discord server to join in on The Witcher conversation.
