Almost Half of CD Projekt Red Staff Is Now Working on The New Witcher Game

The time has finally come when The Witcher devs CD Projekt Red have released Cyberpunk 2077’s much anticipated Phantom Liberty expansion along with several of its subsequent patches. Now the company will focus most of its efforts towards the new Witcher game codenamed Polaris.

Nearly 50% of CDPR working on The Witcher 4

Thanks to CD Projekt Red’s recent financial report, we can see how much staff is working on Polaris aka The Witcher 4. As of October 31, 2023 it’s roughly 50% of the CDPR development team.

The number grew significantly after the release of Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty and according to CDPR CEO Adam Kicinski, the number of people working on The Witcher 4 will grow as high as 400 developers by mid 2024. Here’s a chart for that:

As you can see, the large chunk there is Polaris, but there are also plenty of people currently in transfer from Cyberpunk. Not all will be transferred to The Witcher, however, as the Cyberpunk sequel is also starting very early development.

The red section on the chart is project Sirius, the single-player/multiplayer spinoff game set in The Witcher world developed by The Molasses Flood dev team, which were acquired by CD Projekt. Not much is known about it aside from the fact that it underwent a slight reboot during development.

All in all, production on the new Witcher game is gaining momentum and will kick into full gear in 2024, although development will be long as usual. Last year, during a similar earnings report, CDPR said that it was possibly more than three years away.

In any case, The Witcher franchise is moving forward with many new entries including a new book from Andrzej Sapkowski himself. Here’s a list of all major upcoming Witcher projects:

The Witcher Season 4 is in production for a 2025 release. Andrzej Sapkowski’s new Witcher book has a planned Winter 2024/2025 release with The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep anime set for a late 2024 release as well.
