With only nine days left until the first half of The Witcher Season 3 debuts on Netflix, the streamer keeps dropping little bits and pieces, promoting the Henry Cavill, Anya Chalotra and Freya Allan series. Today it’s something we wanted to talk about for a while and a new clip from IGN provided the right opportunity.
Thanedd ball is Yennefer’s idea
In the new behind-the-scenes clip, Anya Chalotra reveals that that “Yennefer is a bit of a politician when she goes back to Aretuza.” And it’s true, we’ll see Yennefer dipping her toes back into politics this season, from Episode 4 and onwards. Chalotra furthermore says that “[Yennefer] has to organize the Conclave.”
This is all part of her political arc in The Witcher Season 3. After her banishment and persecution by the mages in Season 2, Yennefer will manage to persuade the other mages to unite against Nilfgaard and the first step is to throw a big lavish ball and organize the Conclave of Mages.
As far as we can tell, Yennefer’s true motivation is that she wants to protect Ciri and Aretuza and the North will do the trick. “Aretuza is the best thing for her“, Yennefer says in the teaser.
But not everything goes smooth as the Thanedd ball includes people who are in active pursuit of the Lion Cub of Cintra, as we all know. On top of that, there are various political actors who hijack the entire Thanedd event for their own purposes.
Yennefer’s political arc may go further into Vol. 2, but that’s something for us to confirm and talk about at a later point.
The Witcher Season 4 is in production for a 2025 release. Andrzej Sapkowski’s new Witcher book has a planned Winter 2024/2025 release with The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep anime set for a late 2024 release as well.
