The third season of Netflix’s The Witcher is a turning point for both its characters and the viewers as well. While the story is headed to the future, it will also have Henry Cavill’s Geralt have a few blasts from the past.

Warning: mild spoilers ahead

What happened to Geralt’s mother?

In one of the new episodes, we’ll learn what happened to Geralt’s mother Visenna. A mutual acquaintance, a healer, reveals to Geralt that his mother passed away not long ago and says she talked about her son at the end. Geralt is skeptical about his mother being remorseful for abandoning him as a child.

In fact, this is a conversation that popped up in an audition for the aforementioned healer over a year ago. The character was codenamed ‘Archway’.

Geralt: “When did that happen?”
Archway: “About a year ago. We were at the temple. Morning. His family were killed in a fire, but I was there for Valencia [Visenna].”
Geralt: “She’s dead.”
Archway: “She was very sick. She talked about you a lot at the end.”
Geralt: “I don’t know about that.”

This is a storyline that also involves Fake Ciri and some sick experiments by a certain mage. The audition dialogue below has a few more details.

Visenna isn’t the only blast from Geralt’s past, however. We also get to see someone very unexpected: Otto Dussart, a werewolf that is featured in Andrzej Sapkowski’s Season of Storms.

Otto is a werewolf, who, much like the vampire Regis, was very humane and kept himself very restrained throughout his life. Geralt spared his life and Otto helped the witcher at a later point in Season of Storms.

On top of that, Archway’s comment “His family was killed in a fire” makes us think that “he” may actually be Otto.

Otto Dussart is played by Dempsey Bovell (Young Wallander) in The Witcher Season 3.

The Witcher Season 4 is in production for a 2025 release. Andrzej Sapkowski’s new Witcher book has a planned Winter 2024/2025 release with The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep anime set for a late 2024 release as well.
