More big VFX studios join The Witcher Season 2

In a previous article about visual effects, we informed you that Industrial Light & Magic and The Third Floor have joined the work on the second season. ILM has been in the news lately since they helped Disney’s The Mandalorian create their virtual LED sets, a technical breakthrough that will have a big future in the film and TV industry. However, it turns out this is not the end of news on the topic. As we found out, other well known studios are also working on visual effects for season two.

One of the more notable examples of the VFX work in the first season

The first new studio we found is the award-winning Rodeo FX that has been operating in the industry since 2007. Over the past few years they have worked on many huge and very well known productions such as Game of Thrones, Stranger Things, Fantastic Beasts and Deadpool.

The second new studio is the Canadian studio Mr. X. Their most recent credits are Vikings, Carnival Row and Cursed. In addition, there are many very strong indications that Nviz, who worked in the first season, will also return to work in the second season.

This means that the studios that are working on the visual effects of season two are the following: Industrial Light & Magic, Rodeo FX, Cinesite, One of Us, Platige Image, Mr. X, The Third Floor, Clear Angle Studio, Nviz.

Does increasing the number of studios mean that we will see more effects in the second season or will things get more spectacular and polished? Or maybe both? The only thing left now is waiting for the final product. Whenever the first trailer airs, we will know more.

  1. I’m excited for s2 beyond words and these news sounds great to me. It seams Netflix is really invested in the show and rightfully so. The Mandalorian, Game of Thrones, Fantastic Beasts etc are all visually stunning. I hope we’ll get a trailer soon.

  2. Possibly need extra studio time to counteract the masks, distancing, etc too but I’m looking forward to seeing the whole package.

  3. 👍I can’t wait for s2! I loved s1 -minus a few things – but from what I see so far s2 sounds great. The main characters were spot on imo and the actors were fantastic but some visual and special effects, writing & costumes could be better. It seems s2 is fixing them. Thanks for the heads up RI. 👌

  4. OMG! S2 is gonna be a blast. If they improve the effects a little bit and if they stick closer to the soul of the books, not necessarily the letter but the meaning behind them, we are in for a hell of a ride. Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri are great and I can’t wait to see their family dynamic to start forming. I feel s1 was the prologue and now we are getting the actual story. 🙏 Please let them do the family and the romance right!

  5. I am nagging all the time about political correctness and stuff, but wholeheartedly support this decision, the dragon by platige image was horrible and opposite of ambitious which is sad as dragons take top spot in Sapkowski’s world

  6. This mean Netflix want to get season 2 done without delays, despite of any issues and injuries on set. Also I guess there would be absurdly short time for postproduction.

  7. Although the CGI didn’t bother me as much as others, I’m glad they get the best studios out there for s2. Netflix shows that they do concider The Witcher their flagship and that makes me happy!
