It’s been over two years since The Witcher‘s spinoff about the band of misfits called The Rats wrapped production. It had a rough road, but recently we revealed that the project is still alive and will be released sometime later this year as well. Now we seemingly have the release date for The Rats, at last.
The Rats Get a Release Date Alongside Season 4

What’s on Netflix reports that The Rats: A Witcher Tale feature-length special is eyeing to be released on the same day as The Witcher Season 4, on October 30, 2025.
That’s an unusual way to release a special, when, for instance, Netflix’s The Sandman released its specials one or two weeks after the main seasons. In any case, it looks like on October 30 instead of eight episodes of The Witcher, we’re kind of getting nine.
We first reported the title in July 2024, a year after the project prematurely wrapped in Cape Town, South Africa after just two months of production out of six.
The Rats: A Witcher Tale was initially meant to be a miniseries consisting of six or eight episodes, but after some troubles and the poor reception of Blood Origin, Netflix wanted to cancel it altogether. At one point, there were considerations to incorporate the existing footage into Season 4 as flashbacks. In the end they were convinced to keep the footage and release it as a feature-length special.
The Rats: A Witcher Tale will tell the story of the group of teenagers that Ciri meets at the end of The Witcher Season 3. This would be the time before they met Ciri, so Freya Allan isn’t involved in this project.
There was a brief synopsis for the ptoject back when it was a miniseries: “Six teenage thieves must rely on their criminal skills as they plan the biggest heist of their careers against the most dangerous crime ring in the kingdom.”

The cast of The Rats includes:
- Ben Radcliffe as Giselher
- Christelle Elwin as Mistle
- Fabian McCallum as Kayleigh
- Aggy K. Adams as Iskra
- Juliette Alexandra as Reef
- Connor Crawford as Asse
- Dolph Lundgren as Brehen
- Sharlto Copley as Leo Bonhart
- Deoudone Pretorius as Juniper
- Morgan Jade Santo as Dulcie
- Bianca Simone Mannie as Sonora
- Carla Fonseca Mokgata as Orla
- Litha Bam as Miss Skret
- Stevel Marc as Lord Ridot
- Aubrey Shelton as Barker
- Warren Masemola in an unknown role
Showrunner and main writer of The Rats is Haily Hall, who wrote multiple episodes in the first three seasons of The Witcher. Mairzee Almas (Shadow and Bone, The Sandman) served as director of The Rats.
The Witcher Season 4 is has been out since October 30, 2025. Andrzej Sapkowski’s new Witcher book Crossroads of Ravens is available internationally since September 30, 2025. CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher 4 is now in full production.
