The first leg of The Witcher‘s final season production has come to a close. Filming took place in South Africa across several locations and here we’ll recap all that we know that has happened with Ciri, Yennefer, Triss. Maybe even Toussaint?
Lots of Ciri scenes

The main focus of the South African shoots of The Witcher Season 5 was Freya Allan’s Ciri. They started from February 26 with scenes that we assume are related to the fighting pit that Ciri is forced to fight in after getting captured by Leo Bonhart. As we mentioned before, they used some of the sets from The Rats: A Witcher’s Tale spinoff that also filmed in South Africa.
A lot was done at the aforementioned Rats sets, which could be Ebbing in the series, home of Dominik Houvenaghel, crime lord and Leo Bonhart’s cousin.
As far as we know, Ciri scenes continued to be filmed into the final week, but from multiple episodes of Season 5, which is normal for location shoots. They did everything they needed in South Africa and they’re done.

One other outdoors location that we know of were the Stadsaal Caves and Cederberg Mountains in Cederberg, South Africa.
That whole rock formation resembles Canary Islands’ Roque Nublo that was used in Season 1, where Yennefer was helping Queen Kalis and her baby escape a mage assassin. But that’s most likely unrelated.

Aside from those locations, some of the filming also took place around the town of Stellenbosch, which isn’t far from Cape Town. Those also involved Ciri and some killing with many fake dead bodies.
Yennefer and Triss subplot?

Speaking of Yennefer, Anya Chalotra and Anna Shaffer arrived in Cape Town, South Africa on March 15 with filming Yennefer and Triss scenes in the final week.
Unfortunately, we don’t know much about what their scenes involved, but the shoot wasn’t long as filming already wrapped in South Africa.

It’s difficult to speculate about this subplot as a very large amount of the plot revolving around the Lodge of Sorceresses in Season 4 and Season 5 will likely be original content, based on how things ended in Season 3. There will, of course, be some common plot points with the books, but much less compared to Geralt and Ciri, who do have an overwhelming amount of source material to adapt from in the later books.
Did they film Toussaint in South Africa?

One of the big questions we had in the weeks prior, will South Africa stand for the picturesque duchy of Toussaint with its picturesque vineyards? If you look at the photos, the locations fit perfectly. The sunny weather, the vineyards, the mountains and rocks around the place.
Plus, if they do Toussaint, it would have to be Season 5. Season 4 ends with Geralt’s Hansa winning the Battle of the Bridge for Queen Meve and Toussaint could end up being somewhere in Season 5.
But the perfect fit aside, did it actually happen? We have no evidence of them filming Toussaint scenes. Liam Hemsworth arrived in the UK at the beginning of the month, but he could have flown to South Africa during these last two weeks. In any case, there’s a possibility, but no evidence as of yet.
We’ll keep digging as the final of The Witcher continues filming. It is expected to wrap in September 2025, so 6 more months to go until it’s over.
The Witcher Season 4 is has been out since October 30, 2025. Andrzej Sapkowski’s new Witcher book Crossroads of Ravens is available internationally since September 30, 2025. CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher 4 is now in full production.
