By Last week it finally happened, we got our first look at Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia, who is replacing Henry Cavill in The Witcher Season 4. One thing was confusing, though. Why were they reshooting the fight between Geralt and Vilgefortz that we saw in Season 3? Now we have some more conext about that.
Different versions of how Geralt looked like
It turns out that what we saw last week was Liam Hemsworth’s introduction scene as Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher Season 4. The way that it’s done is through differing accounts of the legendary fight between Geralt and Vilgefortz.
The new season opens in a flash-forward, a century after our heroes, when their story has become a legend. In the opening, a travelling beggar/storyteller called Stribog (Clive Russell) is telling the legend of Geralt of Rivia to a group of children, including one named Nimue (Eve Ridley).
During the tale several versions of this fight are thrown in by the kids, as we understand. This likely explains Liam Hemsworth also wearing the Season 2 armor. We heard Stribog is correcting the errors along the lines of “That didn’t happen” or “He didn’t look like that” with the montage showing a more and more correct version each time.
That being said, we don’t know if they’ll use footage with Henry Cavill to refute his appearance as Geralt as an incorrect version of the legend or whether that only refers to the old armor and other cosmetics that Liam will wear.
Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to get an explanation of Anya Chalotra‘s presence there, so we can’t say if she was filming an entirely different Yennefer scene of if there is a version of the fight where Yennefer is participating as well.
In any case, the entire fight isn’t being redone, just several bits of it for the purposes of introducing Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia. We hope to find out more details about this scene soon, so stay tuned.
