Season 3 of Netflix’s The Witcher is all but confirmed

A whole Covid lifetime ago, back in 2019, Netflix renewed The Witcher for a second season ahead of the first season’s release date. But even before that rumours from TV and film industry insiders have been circulating that Netflix has been generous enough to grant Lauren Hissrich and Co. not one, but a whole two seasons after the first. No one had any solid proof that season three will be happening however. Until now, that is.

We’re happy to reveal that season three of The Witcher has been added to the database of the Writers Guild of America. It’s all but officially confirmed now and all we need is the announcement from Netflix.

To remind you, back in July 2019, insider KC Walsh claimed that The Witcher got the “Sabrina treatment” and was greenlit to three seasons instead of just one. There wasn’t much doubt that season three would happen with the hype and success of the first season, but it’s nice to get something solid on the matter.

When will we even see Season three, you might ask? Well, we won’t see season two until the second half of 2021, so it would be 2022 at the earliest for season three.

It will be a long ride, but for now The Witcher‘s Season two is in production and Redanian Intelligence will be watching.

  1. do not want to be rude, but it was expected and anticipated by most people – Netflix also has tendency to do 2/3 seasons and kill a franchise. I just hope that now, when there will be linear story telling dario & eels are not gonna angry the fans too much. It was quite strange that first season had very poor writing

  2. Even though I largely like the Witcher books, I think that the 3rd and 4th of the Ciri-Geralt saga (Baptism of Fire and Tower of Swallows) are the weakest in that series, occasionally even terse and repetitive. It may be that a 3rd season of the Netflix series still does not enter into that material but very likely they would be deep into the 2nd volume (Time of Contempt) or even towards its end by the time a 3rd season finishes. At that point the people in charge at Netflix really have to think about how to go on. In my opinion, adapting volumes 3 and 4 would be difficult. Either a lot needs to be cut, or one would have to devote far more attention to detail. But there is a high risk of loosing a significant part of the audience from that point on since already the book material is not at the level it was before. A pity really, the last volume (Lady of the Lake) is again quite good and matches the quality of the first two. If I were to make a prediction, I would guess the Netflix series gets either scrapped after a 3rd season or at most there will be a 4th season, dropping most of the narrative from volumes 3 and 4.
