By Production for the third season of Netflix’s The Witcher is slowly coming to an end. However, there are still two-three weeks left for the cast and crew. As you can read here, recently they filmed scenes related to the Brokilon forest with Henry Cavill and Meng’er Zhang and that is not the end for outdoors locations. Today, we have another.
Next destination: Guildford
As we managed to find out, for the last few days preparations were taking place at the Guildford Cathedral located in the town of Guildford, south-west of London. Filming there will presumably take place one week from September 1 to September 9, 2022.
The scenes that are to be filmed in Guildford Cathedral will be for episodes 7 or 8, directed by Bola Ogun.
The location was also recently used in the new Netflix hit series The Sandman.
What scenes will be filmed at Guildford Cathedral? We do not have confirmation yet, but we have a few possible suggestions as to what the location could stand for in The Continent.
Option 1: Loc Grim
We suppose that Cathedral could be Loc Grim, specifically the throne room of Loc Grim, the summer residence of Nilfgaard Emperor, Emhyr var Emreis. It was here that the False Ciri (potentially played by Frances Pooley) was brought and first shown to the world and it was then that Emhyr discovered that he had been deceived by his own people.
Near Loc Grim also lived Xarthisius, the mage who pinpointed the whereabouts of the real Ciri in the Korath desert. Therefore, potential Xarthisius scenes could also be filmed in Loc Grim. And as we reported recently, more scenes from Korath were filmed, but this time in England.
Option 2: Montecalvo
The second option is Montecalvo Castle, the seat of Philippa Eilhart, where the Lodge of Sorceresses was established. As we know from the books, the Lodge debated in the pillared hall of the Montecalvo castle and this room could be in the interior of the Cathedral.
At the beginning of April, we already informed about shooting scenes in front of the Predjama Castle. In this scene was attended by Philippa, Sabrina, Yennefer, Margarita, Keira, Triss and Francesca, all members of the Lodge; albeit Yennefer only being a temporary member in the books.
Perhaps Predjama Castle in the series could be the Montecalvo Castle, but its interior could be be in Guildford Cathedral.
Of course, there’s a chance that Guildford Cathedral will serve as an entirely different location from The Witcher world. However, considering the appearance and the number of filming days, these two options seem to be the most likely for the moment.
It would also help if locals and professional photographers happened to be there during the filming period.
Season 3 of The Witcher is in production until mid-September 2022 for a 2023 release. The live-action prequel The Witcher: Blood Origin is in post-production after two weeks of reshoots and is currently eyed for a Christmas 2022 release.
