House of the Dragon Season 2 seemingly renewed at HBO

The much anticipated prequel to HBO’s Game of Thrones, the biggest hit series of the last decade is finally premiering on August 21, 2022 after wrapping filming earlier this year. With all the post-production work still to be conducted until August, it doesn’t mean writing work for Season 2 can’t already begin. In fact, that’s exactly how Game of Thrones would operate. Each next season was already being written before the current one was released.

House of the Dragon Season 2 begins writing

We’ve been told by our sources that writing for House of the Dragon Season 2 has indeed begun, which suggests HBO has already quietly renewed the new series, albeit without an announcement at this time. The official announcement of the renewal should normally come closer to either the Season 1 premiere or the finale, as networks usually do.

Just in February, HBO programming chief Casey Bloys suggested in an interview with THR that there was a good chance House of the Dragon would get a Season 2:

“Typically speaking, I like to take an approach where we will talk about what a second season might look like and talk about scripts. But we tend to like to see how a show performs. That said, if I were betting, I’d say there’s a pretty good shot that House of the Dragon will get a season two. But we tend to like things to air and give it some time. That said, on most shows, we’ll do preparation and put ourselves in a good position to move forward.”

Whichever way it went down between executives behind the scenes of HBO, it’s good to know that House of the Dragon Season 2 was approved. That said, no series is ever bulletproof from a sudden cancellation. If come August House of the Dragon performs terribly and HBO deems it a disaster, it obviously can be cancelled even with scripts written and ready. But judging by the way things look, this probably won’t be the case and everything will be fine.

When we might see House of the Dragon Season 2?

One shouldn’t hold their breath too long for that one. The first season took the most of 2021 and a little bit of 2022 to film, and we don’t even know when the filming starts for Season 2. If they begin filming Season 2 as early as late 2022, a late 2023 release date would probably be pushing it.

It’s not impossible, but judging by the Season 1 production timeline, an early 2024 release would be a safer prediction for House of the Dragon Season 2. But this is entirely speculation at this point and we won’t know anything until much later.

We cannot wait for August 21 to return to Westeros once again after all these years. If you like The Witcher too, we invite you to read or main category where we closely follow the production of Season 3 and the other spinoffs.
