Possible planned release date for The Witcher Season 2

As it has been reported, the second season of Netflix’s The Witcher has suspended its production in March due to COVID-19 concerns and has thoroughly disinfected its sets after learning that Kristofer Hivju (Nivellen) has contracted the Coronavirus (he recovered from it later). No one knows for sure when filming will resume, but several reports might have some clues to that and also a possible release window. So let’s dive into it!

First, Deadline reported that the current date to resume productions in the film and TV industry is September. The article naturally doesn’t mention The Witcher as it’s about the state of the industry in general, but if September is the month when a lot of productions are planning to resume filming, we could expect The Witcher to fall in the same line.

Then there are two fiscal reports from Platige Image, who worked on special effects on Season 1 and will also work on Season 2. They mention in their latest report from April 27, 2020 that they will be working on all eight episodes of the second season and their deadline for that is July 2021.

To add more context, their report regarding Season 1 stated that the deadline for their work was November 2019. Season 1 was released in December 2019 and it would be safe to assume that Season 2 is currently planned to drop on Netflix around August 2021.

Filming of Season 2 in February with Anya Chalotra (Yennefer), Mimi Ndiweni (Fringilla) and Tom Canton (Filavandrel)

This works perfectly with filming possibly resuming in September as mentioned earlier. With one month of filming done before the lockdown, The Witcher‘s team has around 10-12 months of filming and post-production left. If they indeed resume in September, that would land them on a July/August 2021 release date.

This is all, of course, if plans don’t change and COVID-19 doesn’t surprise us all even more. As you can imagine, that is entirely possible as well.

With a possible Summer 2021 release window in mind, stay patient, stay home and stay safe.
